LeSean McCoy hasn’t been in training camp very long, but has already caught the eye of Marty Mornhinweg, Eagles offensive coordinator.
Mornhinweg has seen where McCoy has benefited from what he’s learned at the team’s mini-camp this spring.
“He’s a pretty sharp guy,”
Mornhinweg said. “Now we ask the running back position to do an awful lot. He’s still working through some things, but he’s really a bright young man. I do think that by, lets say the middle of training camp, he should be pretty comfortable. It appears that that’s the way it’s going.”
McCoy, a 5-foot-10, 198-pounder, was the Eagles’ 53rd pick overall in the second round. He played just two seasons for the University of Pittsburgh. A year ago, he had 1,403 yards on 248 carries. He scored 23 rushing touchdowns and caught 31 passes for 299 yards. Mornhinweg is looking forward to watching him play when the Eagles go to live contact in training camp.
“There are a couple things that I really would like to see and see him do well,”
he said. “That will be important once we get into it with the pads. I know in some things he’ll be even more effective than he is now and like I said, there are a couple things we will need to see him do and do real well. The first one is pass protection. Then, there are one or two other things I’d like to see as well.”
McCoy has been getting a lot of repetitions in training camp while running back Brian Westbrook works out with Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder. Westbrook is recovering from off-season ankle surgery. McCoy, a Harrisburg native, who starred at Bishop McDevitt High School, is expected to make a contribution this season. He and Eagles veteran running back Lorenzo Booker will get a good look from head coach Andy Reid and Mornhinweg during the preseason.
