Topping the board
If there's one receiver the Cowboys probably won't get a shot at, based on where they're drafting, it's Cal flyer DeSean Jackson, one of the country's most explosive players over the last three years.
That's unfortunate, too, because he'd probably fit in perfect -- with his return-game ability and blinding speed that would nicely complement what the Cowboys have at receiver. And it's also too bad because this guy seems to be listening to all the same people.
Since he played collegiately in the Bay Area, and because the DeBartolos represent him, Jackson was able to cajole the legendary Jerry Rice to come down to API in Pensacola, Fla. to work out with him.
"Jerry's a great dude," Jackson said. "I've been very fortunate to work with him. He came on and was just very supportive of me. Like I said, great mentor, has all the right things to say."
DeSean Jackson said that Rice emphasized the off-field aspect of the profession. And in that regard, Jackson's got plenty of people to lean on.
He graduated from Long Beach Poly before going to Cal, a high school that's produced as many pro athletes as some schools have college athletes. So he's got guys like Willie McGinest and Marcedes Lewis in his corner to help counsel him.
Now, the downside. He checked in today at 5-foot-9 and 169 pounds. That's not going to help him. And that's a big reason why he'll be going through all the workouts here, including running the 40 on Sunday.
"I'm trying to impress a lot of people, open up a lot of eyes," Jackson said. "I don't know exactly what I'm going to run yet. But I know I'm definitely going to run a good time."
